Greetings!
I am John Palmer, a clinical social worker in private practice, offering individual adult, adolescent, couple, and family therapy services.
Professional Training and Experience:
I received my Masters of Social Work degree in 1995 from The University of Texas at Austin. I began my private practice in November, 1998. Prior to that time, I provided psychotherapy services for three years under the employ of Davis Psychotherapy Associates. In addition, I received training while at the Austin Child Guidance Center (1995 - 1999) where I provided therapy services to children, adolescents, and their families. Professional memberships include the National Association of Social Workers and the Austin Society for Psychoanalytic Psychology. I have also completed six years of post-graduate, marriage and family therapy study conducted by a prominent psychologist here in Austin. I value continuing education and participate in training and consultations on a regular basis.
Areas of Experience and Expertise:
My training and experience as a clinical social worker allows me to work with a wide range of people. However, my primary areas of expertise include:
· Depressive and bipolar disorders · Anxiety disorders · Couples therapy · Adolescent therapy · Relationship issues, including family issues · Trauma and recovery · Alcohol and substance abuse recovery · Stress management · Mindfulness and relaxation training · Grief and loss issues
Treatment Orientation and Therapeutic Style:
My training has been in psychodynamic therapy, family systems theory, object-relations couple therapy, and cognitive-behavioral theory. This diversity of training allows me to individualize my treatment based upon client needs and wishes.
I am an active therapist who readily engages with clients in the therapeutic process. My style tends to be warm, empathic, and friendly. I believe that the therapist must provide an atmosphere of trust and safety in order for clients to be willing to openly explore their thoughts, feelings, fantasies, and behaviors.
Our initial sessions together are an evaluation period as we explore what brings you to therapy. We will try to clarify your goals for treatment, and we will get an initial understanding of what factors in your past and present life contribute to the issues of concern. At the end of this evaluation period, we will decide together whether I am the right therapist for you.
Insurance and payment policy: I am currently a preferred provider for APS HealthCare. For this plan I accept co-payments. If you wish to use your insurance and I am not a provider for your insurance company, you are responsible for payment. I will be happy to fill out the appropriate form for you to submit to your insurance company for whatever reimbursement you are entitled. At this time, I accept cash, personal checks, and most credit cards for payment, due at the time of service unless other arrangements have been made in advance.
