Hello, and welcome to my information page.

I am a clinical psychologist in private practice here in Austin, Texas and offer individual therapy, couples therapy, and behavioral medicine consultation for persons aged 16-90.

I have two offices, one centrally located at Barton Oaks Plaza and one Southwest close to Oak Hill convenient to Lakeway, Dripping Springs, and Southwest Austin.

Main Areas of Interest and Expertise:

I am a generalist who enjoys working with a wide range of people. My main areas of expertise include:

Couples therapy (an area of special enjoyment)

Relationship issues

Depression

Bipolar disorders (using Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy)

Anxiety disorders (using cognitive behavioral treatment methods)

Family issues, including adult children and parents in conflict

Trauma

Grief and loss

Life transitions, including divorce

Coping with illness, especially cancer, cardiac, and autoimmune illness

Mindfulness and meditative work

Behavioral medicine: stress management, relaxation training, managing sleep disorders, and etc.

Style of Therapy:

I have extensive training in psychoanalytic therapy, family systems theory, affective neuroscience, and behavioral medicine. This enables me to work with a good deal of flexibility, depending on my clients needs. I approach everyone as an individual rather than applying a general technique to all. My guiding theory posits that all people come to therapy with strong wishes (conscious or unconscious) to master their problems; it is my job to connect with my clients, listen with care, and jointly develop a plan to help them solve their problems and overcome any obstacles they may encounter. In situations where acceptance rather than problem-solving is what is needed, we will work in that realm.

My style is warm, interactive, and personable; rather on the humorous end of the continuum. However, I keep up with the latest developments in neuroscience and work when possible in ways that are data based and empirically validated. I have practiced as a therapist for over 30 years, love my work, and consider it a pleasure and a privilege to consult with those of you who choose to work with me.

Biography:

I obtained a BA in psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1976, and an MA and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1982. From 1982-84, I was an adjunct professor and post doctoral fellow at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, and an adjunct professor at Trinity University. In 1984, I joined Austin Regional Clinic (a multi-specialty medical clinic) and remained there until 1993, when I went into private practice. I have been an adjunct professor in clinical psychology at The University of Texas for the last 26 years, and a member of the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group, where I teach and train in Control Mastery theory.

Insurance

I am not an in-network provider on any insurance panels; however, any insurance that has a PPO option allows clients to be reimbursed for my services as an out-of-network provider.

Though I ask clients to directly pay me for my services, I will file with their insurances as a courtesy, if they wish.

Please contact me if you have questions or would like to talk further.
